MANASA TRUST (ESTABLISHED IN 1998)

Manasa Trust was founded with the objective of promoting the concept of positive mental health education and trying to drive away the myths and misconceptions regarding human behaviour, thus contributing towards the overall development of the community.

It was established in the year 1998 as a charitable trust with multiple aims and soon decided to focus more on the primary objective of imparting education.

As a first step to fulfill its objective, educating the nursing, psychology and psychiatric social work students was taken up and about 90 batches of students have availed this training and made our efforts broad based and meaningful.

Manasa as a training center for psychiatric Nursing has been recognized by the Indian Nursing Council. It offers Psychiatric Nursing training to Nursing candidates coming from about 100 colleges & functioning as an examination center. Nursing candidates are also posted here for internship.

Post graduate students in psychology and social work from various colleges of different universities in Karnataka are being provided with an opportunity to do assignments and block placements in our nodal institution, Manasa Nursing Home to cater to the increasing demands for counseling and psychotherapy in this globallised world.

Manasa Trust hosts literary, socio cultural and academic activities. Manasa Trust also organizes the annual Late Kateel Appu Pai lectures on contemporary issues. Dr. Mrs. Kiran Bedi: Shri Mohan Agashe, Mrs. Margaret Alva, H.E. Balakrishna Shetty, Ambassador, Bahrain, Dr. BM. Hegde: Shri Girish Karnad; Shri. Shyam Benegal; Shri. Suresh Heblikar: Ramon Magsaysay awardee-Shri P. Sainath: Shri. Jairam Ramesh: Hon. CM of Goa Digambar Kannath: Justice Santosh Hegde, Shri Amol Palekar and Shri. Prabhu Chawla are among the celebrities who have delivered the annual lectures. These activities have mostly been collaboratively organized in association with different local educational institutions.

Manasa Trust decided to offer post graduate diploma courses through its unit for Mental Health under the name of Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health to disseminate mental health awareness. to offer quality education in the field of mental health. The objective is to prepare a large number of paramedical workers, trained counselors with

additional expertise in mental health in the country The courses offered by the center also provide authentic and scientific information about mental health to those who are interested.

Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health: Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health was established in the year 2003-04 with the sole aim of offering higher education through Distance Mode, another important step taken by Manasa Trust.

By helping the student community zeal for pursuing postgraduate studies, this in their Institution has successfully provided facilities for students to do post graduate diploma in counseling in distance mode.

To realise this objective, Manasa Trust established a studycentre named Manasa college for Mental Health in Mangalore and entered into MOU with Mangalore University with the shared goal of providing access to higher education to all. This Distance Education Programme is a part of the University’s outreach programme to foster University society relationship.

Source of Clinical Material for the Mental Health Courses: The nodal centre of the academic activities of Manasa Foundation is Manasa Nursing Home, a premiere mental health institution which has done yeoman work in taking Neuro psychiatry to all sections of society literate and illiterate, urban and rural. Considered as one of the biggest private mental health centres in South India, Manasa Nursing Home has a 100 bed inpatient facility. Dr. Ashok Pai and his colleagues have treated a mind-boggling number of patients so far over one lakh seventy-five thousand. They have also meticulously documented all the case histories. This makes Manasa Nursing Home an incomparable archival center in mental health and also a veritable treasure house of direct clinical experience. This in fact is the overriding consideration for starting the courses.

Manasa believes in holistic approach to mental health. Hence, over the years apart from a general psychiatry department, we have branched on to a fully-fledged neurology, physiotherapy and child guidance unit. Community Psychiatry and Psycho-social rehabilitation of psychiatrically ill patients are also a part of the set up.

Everyday, enabled by efficient staff Manasa caters to the needs of at least 350 outpatients and manages a 100 bed inpatient care.

The name of the Trust shall be MANASA TRUST. Trust shall be at ‘Ganga’ J P N Road, 1st Cross, Shimoga and /or such other places as the Trustees may determine.

The objects of the Trust shall be;

EDUCATION:

To establish, maintain, run, develop, improve, extend, grant donate for and to aid in the establishment, maintainance, improvement, and extension of schools, colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions including vocational Training Centres, Research Centres, and Audio Education Centres, and Hostels for Students pursuing their studies.

To institute Studentship, Scholarships, Stipends, Medals, Prizes etc., to help and encourage deserving students and to provide monetary aid to students, scholars and Teachers for pursuing their education.

To establish, maintain, develop and donate for the establishment, maintainance and development of Books Banks and Libraries.

To organise, conduct and assist in the organising and conduct of lectures, seminars and symposia on arts, sciences, commerce and other subjects of general academic interest to students.

To do all that is necessary and incidental for the purpose of achieving the objects in (i) to (iv) above.

MEDICAL RELIEF:

To establish, maintain, run, develop, improve extend, grant, donate for and to aid in the establishment, maintainance, running, development improvement and extension of Hospitals, Clinics, Dispensaries, Medical Laboratories, Research Units, with special emphasis on Medical research in modern medicine including Indian systems of medicine like Ayurveda and similar institutions affording treatment, cure, rest, recouperation and other medical relief to the physically handicapped the aged and the mentally retarded.

To establish, maintain, develop and donate for the establishment, maintainance and development of Blood Banks and Drug Banks.

To organise, run and assist in the organising and running of free medical camps in rural areas.

To do all that is necessary and incidental for the purpose of achieving the objects (i) to (iii) above.

RESEARCH:

To encourage and support research activities in area of Medical Science in general, Mental Health in particular, other areas of science, like humanistic science, etc in India or in any part of the world to bring about general awareness amongst the common public and develop positive health attitudes. Any promotional research activity that eradicate myth and misconceptions about illness both mental and physical and thus contribute towards overall positive attitudes regarding health in the community.

RELIEF TO THE POOR:

To assist and provide for the poor by constructing community halls, Rest Houses etc., to conduct feeding of the poor and to give food, clothing and cash grants to the poor and to grant donations for the support of the inmates of orphaneges, rescue and rehabilitation centres and similar institutions. The poor may also be assisted by way of teaching of crafts, engineering and similar skills and industrial training including on the job training.

To provide relief by giving cash grants in time of natural calamities like earthquakes, floods, famines etc.

To do all that is necessary and incidental for the purpose of achieving the objects in (i) and (ii) above.

Provided that in the advancement or achievement of any of these objects under clause (a) (b) and (c), no business is carried on in the course of the actual carrying out of the objects of the Trust.

OTHER OBJECTS OF GENERAL PUBLIC UTILITY:

To establish, run and aid free public reading rooms and libraries.

To establish, run and aid prayer halls to which all sections of the public will have access.

To aid and assist by way of donations for the renovations or repairs of temples, mosqaues, and churches, gurudwaras or other places as notified by the Central Government in the official Gazettee for the purpose of section 80G of the Income-tax Act to be of historic, archological or artistic importance or to be a place of public worship or reknown throughout any state or states or India.

To provide amenities for holding discourses on Indian Philosophy and allied subjects toughing upon Indian Culture, tradition and way of life.

To do all that is necessary and incidental for the purpose of achieving the objects in (i) to (iv) above.

The Trust hereby created shall be irrevocable.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES:

The first board of Trustees shall consist of the following persons:

  1. Dr K A Ashok Pai S/o Kateel Appu Pai
  2. Dr Rajani Ashok Pai W/o Dr K A Ashok Pai
  3. Preethi Pai D/o Dr K A Ashok Pai

Sri Dr K A Ashok Pai will be Managing Trustee during his lifetime.

The aforesaid Managing Trustee at any time, and time, to time, may fix or vary the number of trustees, appoint new or additional trustees. He is further empowered to remove the trustees from the office of the trusteeship. The aforesaid Managing trustee may appoint, tobe effective after his lifetime, any person tobe the Managing Trustee. If the Managing Trustee does not so appoint a Managing Trustee to succeed him after his lifetime, the remaining trustees may nominate one among themselves to be the Managing Trustee. The said Managing Trustee will enjoy all the powers of the initial Managing Trustees and the powers to nominate a Managing Trustee after him.

Notwithstanding what has been stated in this clause, any of the trustees may retire after giving a calendar month’s notice in writing of his/her intention to do so to each of the other trustee for the time being and upon the determination of such month, the trustee giving such notice shall ipso-factocease to be the trustee of the trust.

The Board of Trustees shall consist of a minimum number three trustees and a maximum number of six trustees.
