KAPMI is a private unaided college established by Manasa Trust in 2017
It has been named Kateel Ashok Pai Memorial College in memory of the founder of Manasa Trust, the late Dr Ashok Pai. Dr Ashok Pai an internationally known psychiatrist was a multifaceted individual who was a writer, a media personality, a popular speaker and a pioneer in community psychiatry. He was also a film maker whose first production Kadina Benki won the president’s silver lotus as the best kannada feature film of the year. He was appointed as the first chairman of the Karnataka government Task Force for Mental Health.
He was dedicated to disseminating mental health awareness through every medium especially education. He established Manasa Educational Foundation for Mental Health (MEFFMH) to co-ordinate distance education courses in Counselling in collaboration with Kuvempu University. It was a successful venture which helped train hundreds of teacher counsellors. It was at this juncture that the activities of Manasa Trust began to expand. Dr Pai established Manasadhara a psycho social rehabilitation centre which also provided skill based training to help individuals in becoming self-dependent and rehabilitate themselves.
After his untimely demise Manasa Trust took the decision to establish KAPMI college in Shivamogga as a unit of Manasa Trust. It has now evolved into a multidisciplinary degree college offering degree programmes such as BA, BSW, B.Sc, B.Com, and BCA. A major milestone was the decision of Kuvempu University to permit KAPMI college to offer the M.Sc Psychology course of Kuvempu University on its campus.
This was followed by the approval of RGUHS to start the M.Sc in Clinical Psychology course with affiliation form Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru.
With its excellent infrastructural facilities, experienced qualified faculty in its units, Manasa Trust was granted approval by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) to start the M.Phil in Clinical Psychology Programme.
Kuvempu Univeristy has now recognised KAPMI college as Research Centre in the subject of Psychology to offer the Ph.D programme in Psychology.
With such rapid multifarious expansion, it was necessary for Manasa Trust to bring all its units together under the nomenclature Manasa Group of Institutions
